"Free Radicals" what are they, and how do they affect hair loss?

What do free radicals have to do with hair loss?

'Free radical' is one of those popular terms that we hear in skin and hair care all the time, but what does it actually mean? For the answer, let’s take a step back into science class.

A free radical is an atom or group of atoms that has an unpaired electron and is therefore unstable. This means it's constantly searching for an electron from another atom to pair with. We won't get too into the details, but just know these guys are trouble! Once a free radical succeeds in gaining an electron from a nearby molecule, it leaves its victim short an electron. This interaction has now made the new molecule a free radical, causing a massive chain reaction where cells function poorly or die. This is called oxidative stress. When free radicals damage or kill enough cells in an organism, guess what happens. It ages!

Antioxidants are molecules that can safely interact with free radicals and terminate the chain reaction before vital molecules are damaged. Although there are several systems within the body that combat free radicals, the body’s natural defenses are not sufficient at combating signs of aging alone; therefore, these powerful micronutrients must be supplied through diet or applied directly to the skin or scalp.

What does this have to do with hair loss?

One of éprouvage’s key ingredients, French Oak Extract, contains highly concentrated antioxidants that neutralize free radicals and reduce the harmful effects of oxidative stress.

On its own, the French Oak Extract found in all éprouvage products can reduce the production of free radicals present in the hair follicle by up to 76%!

Simply put: éprouvage helps prevent signs of aging in the scalp, which means reduced signs of damaged, aging hair. Can you say thicker, fuller, healthier hair? Let’s hear it for the science behind éprouvage!
